Government of
Indonesia, through Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, in collaboration
with IOM Indonesia, Indonesian National Police, and ASEAN Secretariat initiated
“ASEAN Workshop on Human Trafficking and Forced Labor in the Fishing Industry”
which was held on 15-16 August 2016 in Jakarta. It has to be
remembered that behind the seafood that we eat everyday, lies sweat, tears, and
hard works of our fishermen.
HSU under the auspices
of ASEAN SOMTC of ASEAN Member States, fisheries, labor and immigration
authorities of ASEAN Member States during those two days discussed about the licenses,
recruitment and placement system, remediation, and the last but not least how
to ensure ethical production of supply chain in the fishing industry. This
workshop also served the sharing of experiences on the rescuing and assisting
victims of trafficking in the fishing industries.
Hoping that 10 points
of joint recommendation produced from this workshop on would be a reference for
ASEAN countries to have a national policy that fully respect and protect human
rights in the fishery industry. Say no to human trafficking in the fishing
industry!
many thanks Committee!
